Q How do I order your services?

You can first of all submit for a free sample edit. Send a representative sample (5–20 pages) of your work, and 1–2 pages will be edited free of charge and returned to you within a few days. A quote for the final piece – the total work – will also be included with an explanation of how to use Microsoft Word's Tracking tool.
If you decide to employ me for the editing of your work, just let me know when you would like it completed by and how you would like to pay when you send your full document by email. You can also let me know of your desired completion date, if you have one, when you first submit for a free sample edit. If I am not able to do the work, because of time constraints or if I am too busy, then I will let you know straight away. If I am able to help, I will let you know and that I can achieve your requested deadline. Upon clearing of payment, editing will begin. You may pay the full cost upfront or 50% before each half is edited and returned to you. 25% at a time may also be done at my discretion – please ask if you would prefer this option.

Q How do I submit a document for editing?

The preferred method is by Microsoft Word document (.doc or .rtf) by email attachment. Please use your name or the name of your work when naming it. For a free sample edit, you can also cut and paste into the online form – maximum 1000 words for this, please.

Q What happens when I submit?

You will get an acknowledgement within 24 hours, usually within a few hours. If you have asked for a free sample edit, you will receive the edited version of your free sample edit within a few days, usually within 24 hours. A quote for your full work will be provided with it, based on the level of editing needed or on a level you have requested and the total number of words/pages in your final work if provided, or based on per-word/-page if not. A full explanation of Microsoft Word's Tracked changes is provided as well and any questions you may have will be answered. Usually a 'clean' copy is provided as well that is free of Tracking and where all the changes have been 'accepted'. If this is not provided, one will be sent to you upon request. All Tracked changes can be easily accepted or rejected by you from within Word. Comments may also be added to the document that explain a change, suggesting an alternative or asking a question that may clarify the text. These are in Word but are separate from your actual text and can easily be deleted.
For paid editing of your full work, editing is begun upon clearing of 50% of the agreed full cost. When 50% of the editing is completed, it is returned to you. Upon clearing of the remaining 50% cost, the remaining editing is begun and returned by the specified deadline. Any other method of payment can be negotiated – please email me if you would prefer some other method. Editing is begun (except for the free sample edit) after payment clearing in all circumstances.

Q How do I pay and is it safe?

You can pay by major credit or debit card by PayPal, which is completely safe and secure. A small processing fee of around 4% of the total cost is required for PayPal. Moneybookers is also available. Please see the Rates page for the full range of methods available. Please enquire if you would like to pay by any other method.

Q How do you compare with others offering editing services?

Please take a look around at other proofreading and editing sites. Mine compares extremely favourably in terms of high quality editing for a reasonable amount.

Q What services do you offer?

I offer proofreading, which, simply, is checking and correcting for grammatical and spelling errors, plus some basic fact-checking. Copy-editing involves proofreading plus other things such as inconsistencies and meanings. Substantive editing is more laborious and means I take longer over your work for a more comprehensive edit – some rewriting of sentences to 'sound' better to a native English speaker is involved with this level. Scientific editing is also available, particularly cosmology or physics in general. Please see the Services page for a list of what is included in each level. Hard copy proofreading or copy-editing is also available and all the copy-editing/proofreading marks are in use – please contact me to enquire about this, particularly publishers or typesetters.

Q How much is it and do you charge more for rush jobs?

I charge by the word to make it fair to everyone. In contrast to other online editing services, I do not charge more for rush jobs, although I do ask that payment clears before editing is begun, so please do bear that in mind if you have a rush job. There is a higher charge for working over the weekend or UK national holidays if this is required – usually 50% more. I give a 10% discount on the standard rate for students.

Q Do you offer discounts?

Yes – I have a 10% discount for all students.

Q What if I am not satisfied?

I will work with you until you are happy. My goal is to please every client.

Q How is your word count defined?

It is based on a double-spaced, 12-point font-sized document of an average of 300 words per page.

Q Do you offer writing services for students?

I'm afraid not. I don't advocate writing any piece of work from scratch that may lead to a qualification.

Q I'm a student. Do I need to tell my supervisor I will be using a proofreading service?

I strongly advise you to make sure your supervisor is aware that you intend to use an editing/proofreading service for your finished work. Many students I help have come to me because they have been advised by their supervisor to gain help with their written English. I edit for sense and clarity only the English and do not alter in any way the actual content of your work. While editing/proofreading, I always aim to preserve your unique writer's style, ensuring the work remains your own. In case your supervisor is unsure about your use of such services, please feel free to tell them to contact me, and I'll be happy to reassure them.

Q Do you work weekends and through holidays?

Yes, I can work weekends and through UK national holidays if necessary. I usually have an additional 50% 'outside working hours' charge on these.
Of course, I also work throughout school holidays at normal rates.

Q Are you recruiting and can I send you my CV?

Sorry, but I am not accepting any CVs. I am not recruiting and have no intention of doing so.

Q Can we negotiate lower rates?

Students are given a 10% lower rate automatically. Any charities, upon proof (such as a registered charity number), may have editing done at the student rate. Any others are free to enquire if you feel you have special circumstances. Further discounts are not normally offered.

^  To the top  ^

Q Do you accept work from outside the UK?

Of course. Online payment is accepted in most countries around the world. American English can be edited as well as British.

^  To the top  ^

Q Can you answer a question I have that is not here?

Of course. Please feel free to contact me and I will be happy to answer any questions/suggestions/comments you might have.

Q What's your position on unsolicited email/spam? Do you send out unsolicited emails?

I hate spam probably more than you do! I never send unsolicited emails. I never sell, give or otherwise hand over email addresses to anyone else, and I don't disclose any clients' details or details of their work without their full permission first. All work is sent to me with the understanding that I will treat it with full confidentiality.

Q Do you offer discounts for referrals?

Yes! Refer a friend and get 10% off your next editing order (on top of the usual 10% if you're a student). Just make sure your friend tells me who referred them when they order my services.
